A concierge doctor is a physician you pay a retainer to for unhurried, direct access. It is an excellent model for routine care. It is not designed to tell you whether the specialist you have been referred to is the right one.
How a concierge doctor works
You pay a membership or annual fee. In return, the practice keeps a smaller list of patients, so appointments are longer, easier to book, and often available by phone or message.
- —Same-day or next-day appointments
- —Longer consultations and annual check-ups
- —Direct contact with your doctor
Where the model stops
A concierge doctor treats you within their own scope and refers you on when you need a specialist. The referral is usually to people in their own network. That is convenient, but convenience is not the same as evidence that the specialist is the best fit for your case.
The doctor's job is to treat. They are rarely resourced to benchmark surgeons across countries, compare complication rates, or check a clinic's regulatory record.
When you need an independent medical concierge instead
An independent medical concierge does not treat you. Its only job is to find and vet the right care, anywhere, and to be paid only by you. That matters most when the decision is high-stakes:
- —A new cancer, cardiac or complex surgical diagnosis
- —Choosing a plastic surgeon or fertility clinic
- —Treatment abroad, or care across several countries
- —Conflicting advice from different doctors
Can you have both?
Yes. Many clients keep their GP or concierge doctor for day-to-day care and bring in 5 Delphi for the decisions where the wrong answer is expensive: clinically, financially or personally.
Key takeaway
A concierge doctor gives you access. An independent medical concierge gives you evidence about who to access.
